About Being humble

The Dunning–Kruger effect talks about a cognitive bias stating that..

  • Those with low ability at a given task overestimate their own ability
  • Those with high ability at a given task underestimate their own ability

Without going into the detail around challenges and issues behind this thesis, I love two consequent corollaries that I find relevant and valuable:

Be humble about your own ability allows you to build higher abilities at that task in the same way as keeping a positive mindset helps you move forward while overcoming hard obstacles.

Be real since overestimating your own ability always over-exposes your low ability when talking to others with a higher ability. This happens because “you don’t know what you don’t know” and the ones that do know about it also know that you don’t know. That creates a bad lenses, for instance during hiring, a lenses that you don’t want to avoid placing yourself under. Because it burns.
